hai Sofia Mattioli

This week in Hai Society, we met the multifaceted Sofia Mattioli, a South African/Italian visual artist and film maker who grew up in the Italian countryside before moving to Rome as a teenager. Since 2010 Sofia has worked as a creative director and film maker producing a wide range of projects, from music videos, fashion films for Chloe Paris and short documentary style films for the Sotto Sopra NGO who provide education to orphans in Malawi. Sofia’s work is embedded in a mixed medium practise that utilises poetry, dance and astrology to explore various subjects and tell stories. In Particular she ’sees the act of dance as a representative behaviour that unifies us’ and can be seen dancing in some of her own videos such as Directors Cut, an experimental film exploring dance, music and silence in Sri Lanka. On top of all this Sofia is in the early stages of launching a knitwear brand inspired by astrological exploration.

Currently in Jamaica, Sofia sat down with us for a quick chat, and gave us a glimpse into her dreamy surroundings and her new Joni Top!
